Risk Factors of the Diabetic Foot
Diabetic foot syndrome may be caused by the following risk factors:
- A long duration of diabetes and poor metabolic management (= poorly stabilized blood sugar level)
- Diabetic neuropathy
- Peripheral artery occlusive disease (PAOD)
- Overweight, poor nutrition, nicotine and alcohol abuse
- Lack of knowledge by the patient
- Insufficient chiropody
- Unsuitable shoes
- Polymorbidity, including nephropathy, coronary heart disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and coronary insufficiency
