Bedsore – Decubitus Ulcer
Bedsores, more properly known as pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers, are lesions caused by many factors which impact on the skin, such as the general condition of a patient and his or her skin, mobility, unrelieved pressure and friction.
If a patient remains in a single decubitus position, the skin stays in one place for a lengthy period and the underlying tissue is compressed. Inadequate blood and oxygen supply may cause the tissue to become necrotic.
Non-blanchable redness, an indication of the first stage of pressure ulcers, may develop into deep wounds.
